Understanding Cold Allergy

Not everyone can feel comfortable in the cold. In the medical world, the term urticaria (cold allergy) is known, which is the appearance of a lesion that feels itchy and the skin becomes reddish. Each person has different cold allergies. For some people, there can be loss of consciousness, blood pressure drops, and it can be fatal. Anyone can get this allergy, but people in their teens are the ones most commonly affected by cold allergies. In teenagers, cold allergies usually disappear completely within a few years.

Cold Allergy Symptoms

The hands are swollen when in contact with cold objects.

A rash appears on the skin that feels itchy.

Swollen lips and throat when consuming cold food & drinks

Reddish skin.

If the skin feels warmer, the symptoms will get worse.

Causes of Cold Allergies

Allergies can appear when the skin is in cold weather and there is a risk of appearing in windy and humid conditions. Research has found that cold allergies are caused by the release of histamine and chemicals in the bloodstream triggered by cold air. However, it is not certain why the body reacts this way to cold air.

Cold Allergy Treatment

In the case of a severe cold allergy it can be fatal, such as swelling of the throat and tongue causing difficulty breathing, anaphylactic reactions that cause blood pressure to drop, heart palpitations, fainting, to swelling of the arms and legs (torso).

Generally, cold allergies can disappear on their own in a period of weeks to months, but some can last quite a long time. For this reason, if you suddenly feel signs of cold allergy, you should immediately consult a doctor.

Cold Allergy Prevention

For people with cold allergies, it is advisable not to swim in cold water. When the entire surface of the skin is exposed to cold it can cause a severe reaction that causes the person to lose consciousness and drown.
